That match was on my 10th birthday, and as a "Junior Hornet" I got to go onto the pitch and get given a birthday card by Graham Taylor, signed by the whole team. On Boxing Day 197...I CAN'T BE THE ONLY ONE...

On Boxing Day 1977, Us Men, left my Grandparents house in Eastcote and made our way to Vicarage Road to see the mighty Watford battle it out against Northampton (who had a spritely George Reilly playing up front). I was there, standing on the bend between Rookery and Shrodells. Of course, being 10 and football green, I was too young to appreciate the full significance of my good fortune, but the following 10 years were to be a wonderful ride, football-wise.

Three years and two promotions later I was still a young wide-eyed teenager at the time of the League Cup game against Southampton. My friend @campervanliving, I later found out, went to the 1st leg 0-4 away fixture. Parental insistence meant I didn't move from the Home Counties on school nights. However come the home leg I was sitting in my usual seat, W40, in the Main Stand, with my Dad, Uncle (now an UR resident), and most importanly my late Granddad who introduced me to our wonderful club. The away result meant nothing. I didn't worry about defeat at the time, as Elton John's Taylor Made Army could always win. God, it was a great time to be a Watford fan in Taylor's first reign, something Lionel and I both mentioned on twitter the other night: it was a truly magical era.

What a night for the camera man to be ill. That illness has meant this game has become a thing of folklore, an old wives' tale, and enigma. But I was there. I can still picture Cally's goal, and I can remember spilling on to the pitch afterwards.I loved it, EVER BLOODY MINUTE! Even Sim's goal didn't bring on panic. This was our game start to finish. Saints, with or without Keegan, didn't have a prayer.
The next morning I bought ever paper on the way to school, the cuttings of which are in a scrap book upstairs in the loft (a place my lovely wife would like them to stay).
As for the pen, I remember people were giving them out at the turnstiles at the following home game. I took one and thought nothing of it, I even used it at school a few times, but then the Gollum in me took overand I removed the ink cartridge for fear it might leak, and stashed it away with my scrapbooks, programmes, old shirts, tickets etc... It's MY PRECIOUS!!!

That pen represents everything that was great about midweek football at the Vic during Taylor's first reign. Optimistic, exciting, fearless, worldbeaters.
To all at the club, at the time, I owe a great deal. You made my teenage years!!!

@putajumperon

http://twitter.com/#!/putajumperonputajumperonhttp://twitter.com/#!/putajumperonoreply@blogger.com
